About DIONE 2020

The contents produced and disseminated in online social media have placed great challenges to the truthfulness and reliability of scientific information. The volume of fake news is growing every day, affecting many of the spheres of the social, political and cultural life. At the same time, these online environments have opened new perspectives for evaluating science, through the so-called social media metrics. These metrics are considered as a new way of studying scientific objects distributed and discussed in social media. Are the current social media tools effective in assessing scientific communication in online environments? Are the current data processing techniques enough to interpret the contents of social media? What are the technological, economic, political and social challenges faced with the phenomenon of fake news and the social media metrics of science? With the aim of discussing and suggesting potential solutions on these issues, the 1st International Conference on Data and Information in Online Environments (DIONE) is launched, a conference that will have an annual frequency and whose first edition will be held in 2020.

DIONE 2020 is born as a response to the growing interaction between the information sciences, communication sciences and computer sciences. An interdisciplinary space will be provided to enhance cooperation between data science, natural language processing, data engineering, big data, research evaluation, network science, sociology of science and communication communities working on problems of fake news, social media metrics of science and online data processing. DIONE 2020 is aimed at bringing together researchers and practitioners from academia and industries to present theoretical proposals and practical solutions in the treatment, processing and study of data and information produced in online environments, as well as the latest trends in the analysis of network information, social media metrics, and data processing technologies.

This first edition will be held at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), in the city of Florianópolis (SC), Brazil. Florianópolis is known as the “Magic Island” by the historic folklore and legends of the island. It is the capital and second largest city of Santa Catarina state. Florianópolis is also well known for its beautiful landscape and the more of 42 beaches surround the island. The city is located in the south of Brazil, where you can see the mountains and well-preserved Atlantic Forest. The summer in Florianópolis is very hot and the city is full of options to have good times with colleagues, friends and family. Florianópolis has a large tourism infrastructure and qualified attractions attracting tourists all around the world.
